A father of four died rescuing a young girl at a popular beach in South Carolina.
At around 8 p.m. local time on Friday, Aug. 8, the Myrtle Beach Police Department and the Myrtle Beach Fire Department responded to reports of a missing swimmer in the ocean near 10th Avenue South, the police said in a statement posted on Facebook.
Emergency responders learned that the swimmer had been “pulled underwater” by a rip current after bringing a young girl to safety who had also been caught in a rip current. The body of the missing swimmer was found a day later near 11th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach.
Family members identified the deceased swimmer as Derrick Moore, a 47-year-old father of four and teacher from Loganville, Georgia, WRAL News and ABC News 4 reported.

“We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone,” Moore’s daughter said in a statement to WRAL. “He was a great father and we are all going to miss him.”

Moore reportedly did not know the young girl who he jumped into the water to save. Her identity, whereabouts and condition have not been shared publicly.

A man claiming to be the girl’s uncle commented on a social media post from one of Moore’s grieving sons that he was also rescued by the heroic father.
“He saved me and my niece. I am so sorry. My heart goes out to the family. I’m trying to contact the family,” he wrote, per WRAL News.
According to the outlet, social media users have been attempting to help the man connect with Moore’s family. His identity has not been shared publicly at this time.
The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
