The Princess of Wales has long had a reputation for being one of the sportiest members of the royal family. From captaining the hockey team during her time at Marlborough College to playing volleyball in wedges at a charity event, it’s safe to say she is an avid sportswoman.

And she isn’t the only one with a keen interest in athletics. It has been revealed that Kate’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, 11, plays on an out-of-school netball team that competes at a high level across England, per a report.

The report said that far from receiving royal treatment, William and Kate are more than willing to act as regular participating parents, readily driving her to matches and pitching up chairs on the sidelines to cheer her on.

A source told the publication that players of opposing teams were feeling very excited at the prospect of running into the Prince and Princess of Wales.

The culture of the sport, the source said, is very “hands on”, and will see the royal couple enjoying a more “down-to-earth” environment.

It became clear earlier this month that Charlotte is a big fan of netball after she was spotted enjoying a day at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow alongside her family.

Princess Charlotte’s love of sport

The young Princess enjoyed watching Australia take on Jamaica in the semi-final, as well as England’s match against New Zealand. Afterward, Charlotte was seen posing with her mother and the Scotland team.

Speaking with athletes at the event, her father, Prince William said she “loves ballet and gymnastics.” Kate also revealed that Charlotte’s favourite part was “the floor”, adding that she also “likes her dancing.”

It isn’t the first instance in which Charlotte’s penchant for the sport has been hinted at. While speaking at the SportsAid event at the Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre in Marlow in 2023, Kate revealed that she had been helping her daughter with shooting practice.

After the event, England netball player Ama Agbeze said she had spoken to Kate about the sport, which she had enjoyed playing in her younger years.

Kate played in an under-11s netball team at St Andrew’s School in 1992. She memorably played volleyball in five-inch Russell and Bromley wedges at a 2013 SportsAid charity event shortly after giving birth to Prince George.

The Princess also told Ama that she had been showing her daughter the ropes and helping to improve her technique. And netball isn’t the only sport that Charlotte could have a future in. The Princess is also thought to be a fan of running and gymnastics.
