Actor Tim Curry has died at 80 years old. TMZ was first to report the news.

LAPD confirms to PEOPLE that officers responded to a call for service on Aug. 25 at 11:20 p.m. and completed a death investigation for a male in his 80s at home in North Hollywood.

Curry, born in the U.K. on April 19, 1946, was best known for his wide range of comedic — and often villainous — roles. Most famously, he played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a part he would reprise again on stage.

The British star got his start on stage in the West End, starring in the original London production of Hair in 1968 after attending Birmingham University. But according to the actor, he fudged his own experience to get a part in the show. “When asked if he had professional experience and an Equity card, Tim lied about both,” his website reads. “By the time the producers found out the truth, they were sufficiently impressed with his talent and presence to sponsor him for his union membership.”

He would return to the stage over and over again throughout his career, playing for audiences in both London and New York. In 2004, he debuted the role of King Arthur in Spamalot on Broadway. In his lifetime he received three Tony Award nominations and two Laurence Olivier Award nominations for his work in theater.

Curry’s later on-screen work included parts as Rooster Hannigan in 1982’s Annie alongside Carol Burnett and Bernadette Peters, the role of Wadsworth, the butler, in the 1985 cult classic Clue and Long John Silver in 1996’s Muppet Treasure Island.

In 2020, he and Burnett reunited to discuss their sinister Annie characters in a chat for Forbes. “Rooster was a hustler, and people love that kind of character,” Curry explained. “He was a lot of fun. I approached it very much in my way, but the three of us were very close. We were like The Three Musketeers. Carol is, of course, a legend and probably the funniest woman alive.”

Curry also appeared widely on television, including playing the villainous Pennywise the Clown Stephen King’s It, a 1990 miniseries adaptation of the classic horror novel. He also was a prodigious voice actor, winning a Daytime Emmy in 1991 for his work on Peter Pan and the Pirates. Curry’s voice work also includes dozens of audiobooks, and he also released three musical albums: 1978’s Read My Lips, 1979’s Fearless, and 1981’s Simplicity.

In 2012, Curry suffered a major stroke and has used a wheelchair since. Curry, who never married and has no children, mostly pulled back on his acting career then, focusing instead on voiceover projects.

However, in 2016 he joined the cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again, a made-for-TV remake of the iconic film, playing the narrator and criminologist. Of his return, Curry told PEOPLE at the time, “coming back to the project, which I hold very dear. It’s very exciting. It will be very interesting because it’s very close to me.” Laverne Cox, who played Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the new version, added that Curry was “so unbelievably supportive and encouraging, and he’s so funny.”

In 2015, Curry received the lifetime achievement award at the Actors Fund Tony Awards Viewing Party and reunited there with another Annie costar: Aileen Quinn, who played the titular redhead. Quinn told PEOPLE at the time, “It was very emotional because what people don’t realize about him is how kind he is in real life.”

“When I came up to him, I was like, ‘Tim, do you remember this face?’ And he said, ‘Of course I do!’ and he had kind of this wry smile,” Quinn explained. “He has that twinkle in his eye as always. Even though it’s not quite the same as 30 years ago because he’s older now, we had a very nice moment.”

Following his near-fatal stroke in 2012, Curry gave an update on his health in September 2025. “I still can’t walk, which is why I’m in this silly chair, and that’s very limiting. So I won’t be singing and I won’t be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg,” he said at a 50th anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at L.A.’s Academy Museum.

“I was having a massage at the time and I didn’t even actually notice anything, but the guy who was doing the massage said, ‘I’m worried about you, I want to call an ambulance.’ And he did, and I said, ‘That’s so silly,’” he recalled of how he caught the stroke.

In October 2025, Curry made another appearance in celebration of The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s 50th anniversary at a screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery alongside his costar, Barry Bostwick.

Addressing the crowd ahead of the special screening, Curry brought his signature wit: “I’d like to tell you that I haven’t been legless before tonight, but it wouldn’t be true. Unfortunately, I’m currently sitting in a wheelchair, so get over it!”

When fans yelled, “I love you,” at Curry, he replied, “I love you more. I love you much more.”

That month, the actor also published a memoir entitled Vagabond, covering his military-brat childhood and boarding school years, time at university and decades alternating between television, film and stage acting.

“I’ve had the time of my life revisiting my favorite memories over the past couple of years,” Curry told PEOPLE in April prior to publication. Referencing one of Frank-N-Furter’s most famous lines, he added, “I’m shivering with anticipation to share them with you.”
