According to police, Mares allegedly entered the property on Sunday while the homeowner was away. Investigators say kitchen countertops and light fixtures were removed, while water was turned on, flooding parts of the home and yard. When questioned, Mares reportedly told officers she had nowhere to go and that thunderstorms were giving her headaches.

But the latest incident has become even more disturbing because the homeowner’s close friend claims it was not an isolated break-in. She told the New York Post that the property had allegedly been targeted three times over the previous three to four months, and she believes Mares was responsible for all of them. Police have not publicly confirmed that Mares committed the earlier incidents.

The homeowner, who lives on around $900 a month, was away when the latest alleged break-in occurred. A neighbor reportedly noticed the back gate open and lights inside the property before contacting the woman’s best friend, Virginia Pritchett, who was staying in Texas.

Pritchett said the circumstances immediately alarmed her. She claimed the people entering the property appeared to know where to go and what tools to use, raising fears that someone may have been watching the house. The concern became especially serious because Pritchett had planned to move into the property to help her friend.

The latest arrest has also revived attention on Mares’ troubled legal history. She and her son, Caleb Paterson, were arrested in 2016 after their incestuous relationship became public. Both later pleaded no contest to incest charges and were sentenced to probation, while being ordered not to contact one another.

Mares has reportedly experienced multiple encounters with the law since then and has been living without stable housing in Clovis. Her latest arrest places her in the Curry County Adult Detention Center as the allegations surrounding the property continue to unfold.

For the homeowner and her friend, however, the issue is no longer simply property damage. Pritchett said the repeated incidents have left her friend frightened to return home, while she herself fears what could happen if someone breaks in while they are inside.

The most unsettling detail is the allegation that the intruders appeared to know exactly how to access parts of the property and what items to remove. With three reported break-ins now linked by the homeowner’s friend, investigators may have to determine whether the latest incident was simply another act of desperation — or part of a much longer pattern targeting the same house
