When rock band The Big Push went busking on the streets of Brighton this month, they turned an ’80s synth-pop hit into an indie rock masterclass, drawing an immense crowd towards their impeccable, genre-twisting cover.

The Big Push’s recent reinvention of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” has already gone internet-viral, amassing more than 319,000 views within just 12 days of reaching YouTube. Music Man readers can watch their cover unfold in the video below…

Now, covering “Personal Jesus” is no new feat on the rock scene. Back in 2004, the disgraced industrial metal star Marilyn Manson turned the Depeche Mode hit into a BMI Award-winning hit, while reaching the same position on the UK Singles Charts as the 1989 original. The band’s high-energy set and raw, punk rock atmosphere have their audience grooving along in dance, as hundreds crowd around their tiny busking stage. The guitar solo is almost psychedelic, twining late ‘60s effects into its rambunctious sound to craft a cover which melts the generations of rock seamlessly together.
