VERNON Kay broke down in tears on Radio 2 this morning during a discussion about losing a close friend.
The conversation came in Vernon’s Tracks Of My Years segment, which prompted him to halt an interview to try to regain his composure.
The popular presenter was speaking to The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue, 45, about one of his final conversations with his late bandmate, Mark Sheehan.
Admitting that he was overcome with emotion as he wiped away tears, Vernon’s voice cracked as he told the listeners: “It’s got me that… Give me a minute.
“It’s good, it’s good… You know…
“I just think that when you have that relationship with a friend, it’s special. It really is.”

Mark, who was a childhood friend of Danny’s, as well as The Script’s guitarist, died in 2023 aged 46 after a short illness.
During the segment on Radio 2, he spoke about how they wrote the 2012 song If You Could See Me Now about losing their parents, and how the track has new meaning now that Mark isn’t around.
Danny explained: “He wrote that about his dad and now I’m singing that about him on stage. So it’s like, there’s a generation of pain and truth and hurt.
“I find it difficult talking about it, the whole way around. But I find his talent so unique and beautiful that how dare I not honour his memory.
“I could retire the song and never sing it again but how dare I do that.”
Asked whether they had an open conversation about how much he loved him before he died, Danny replied: “Yeah, it wasn’t as long as you would have liked it to be because it was quite a short period of time between me finding out and him passing but we did yeah.”
An audibly emotional Vernon then asked how he now reflects upon their talk, to which he said: “I look back and go, even if we didn’t have that conversation, I knew, because I’ve known him since I was 13 years old, do you know what I mean?”
Vernon then played a song to compose himself before continuing with the feature.
The popular radio host, 52, announced his separation from TV presenter Tess Daly, 57, in May after 22 years of marriage.
In a joint statement at the time, they said: “After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably.”
