Mary Earps, Ella Toone or Fran Kirby? Just One Repeated Symbol Held the Answer! – The 1% Club’s Deceptively Simple Football Code Puzzle Knocks Out 15 Celebrities In Just 30 Seconds, Even Though Solving All Nine Symbols Was Completely Unnecessary!

The 1% Club’s Alphabet Puzzle Sends 15 Celebrity Contestants Crashing Out — But One Tiny Clue Was All It Took To Find The Answer

A question that looked like a complicated code-breaking challenge turned into a mass elimination on ITV’s The 1% Club, with 15 celebrity contestants getting the answer wrong in just 30 seconds. But the biggest twist? They didn’t need to decipher all nine symbols to work it out. One repeated symbol was enough to expose the answer.

The dramatic moment unfolded during a special Soccer Aid edition of the popular quiz, hosted by Lee Mack. The programme brought together professional footballers and celebrities, all competing to raise money for Unicef.

Yet it was a question worth just 30% — far from the notoriously difficult final round — that caught out a remarkable number of players.

Three Possible Answers, Nine Symbols And Just 30 Seconds

The remaining contestants were presented with nine symbols arranged in a horizontal line and given a deceptively straightforward challenge:

“Which England footballer is spelt out in this code below?”

There were three possible answers:

  • A) Mary Earps
  • B) Ella Toone
  • C) Fran Kirby

With only 30 seconds on the clock, the celebrities had to identify the name hidden within the sequence.

When time ran out, the result was brutal: 15 contestants had failed to select the correct answer and were eliminated.

The correct choice was C) Fran Kirby.

The Repeated Symbol That Exposed The Answer

What made the puzzle particularly clever was that contestants didn’t actually have to translate every symbol.

Lee Mack revealed that the key was spotting one symbol that appeared twice in the sequence.

“The only symbol that is repeated represents the second letter of the first name,” he explained.

That single observation was enough to narrow down the options. Fran Kirby was the only answer whose name contained a repeated letter in the corresponding positions.

Suddenly, a code that had appeared complicated became much easier to solve.

Among those who spotted the pattern was England footballer Ella Toone, who successfully answered the question and survived the elimination round.

The competition eventually narrowed to just two finalists: former footballer Clarke Carlisle and comedian Lloyd Griffith, who previously hosted Soccer AM.

For the final 1% challenge, the show moved away from symbols and presented the pair with the opening verse of the original version of “Three Lions.”

Their task was to identify two words that appeared exactly three times in the lyrics.

The question was deceptively simple:

“In the opening verse to the original version of Three Lions, what TWO words feature exactly three times in the lyrics?”

Once again, they had just 30 seconds to find the answer.

Lloyd later admitted that he had misread the question, while Clarke submitted two words: “it” and “know.”

He got them both right.

The correct answer secured an enormous £100,000 for Unicef, bringing the Soccer Aid special to an exciting conclusion.

But while the final challenge delivered the biggest prize of the night, it was the earlier alphabet puzzle that produced one of the episode’s most memorable moments: 15 celebrities eliminated by a question they could have solved without decoding the entire sequence.
