(NewsNation) — Friends of Mica Miller, the pastor’s wife whose 2024 death was ruled a suicide, said that her husband, John-Paul Miller, began grooming her when she was a teen — years before their relationship began.

Bruna Pabon, Ricky Pabon and Sam Rickman, former members of John-Paul Miller’s Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, spoke with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on his podcast “Cuomo Crime Time.”

Mica previously alleged in court filings the grooming began when she was a kid, according to a police report obtained by NewsNation local affiliate WBTW.

‘She was groomed’: Mica Miller’s friends discuss marriage to pastor John-Paul

Ricky Pabon said the alleged abuse predates Mica’s first marriage, and that John-Paul was already close with her first husband, Jeremy Deas, at the time. “She was groomed … all the way through even before her marriage with Jeremy,” he said. “I think in some way, JP had his fingers already in the marriage.”

Bruna Pabon said Mica Miller later told her John-Paul Miller had confessed to “doing things” to videos of her from when she was young, during the period she competed in local beauty pageants. He described Mica’s reaction to piecing it together years later as a slow, difficult realization: “It was like she was seeing two sides of a picture.”

Mica Miller case: Pastor John-Paul Miller denies abuse allegations

John-Paul, who is about 15 years older than Mica, has denied allegations of abuse. He has not been charged in connection with her death, which the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office ruled a suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound at Lumber River State Park back in April 2024.

He faces separate federal charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators, with his trial expected this fall.
