A seemingly simple maths question has left plenty of puzzle fans scratching their heads, with only 5% of people reportedly able to work out the answer. Featured on The 1% Club, the brainteaser looks like an ordinary number sequence at first, but the real trick lies in looking beyond the calculations.
The puzzle was also shared on TikTok by the account @shambles, where it challenged viewers to complete an unusual equation:
If 1+2=6, 3+4=9 and 5+6=7, then what does 7+8 equal?
Many viewers struggled to identify the pattern, while some chose not to attempt an answer at all. During the quiz show segment, one contestant confidently suggested that the result was 10, prompting a mixture of confusion and knowing reactions from the studio audience.
The Hidden Logic Behind the Answer
The solution eventually became clear when the numbers were viewed as words rather than mathematical values.
Instead of adding the numbers themselves, the puzzle requires counting the letters in their written forms and adding those totals together:
- One (3) + Two (3) = 6
- Three (5) + Four (4) = 9
- Seven (5) + Eight (5) = 10
That means the answer to 7+8 is 10, because “seven” and “eight” each contain five letters.
Once this detail is noticed, the pattern becomes much easier to understand. However, the unusual approach caught many people off guard.

The puzzle sparked plenty of discussion in the comments, with some users admitting they had reached the correct answer without understanding the actual reasoning.
One person wrote: “idk how I got it but I got 10. Didn’t even think about the letters”

Others arrived at the same result through entirely different interpretations of the sequence. One viewer explained: “I got 10 but I thought the sequence on the right was going ‘+3,-2’.”
