Chef Brooke Williamson is sharing the most helpful professional advice she has received — and it comes from her parents.

The star of Food Network’s BBQ Brawl, 47, spoke with PEOPLE at the 2026 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen about the early days of her career, starting in a professional kitchen when she was 17 years old.

“I think the best piece of advice that I got that sort of kept me going and kept me realizing that this is where I should be and needed to be was from my parents and it’s also something that I’ve tried to pass on to my son, is be where you’re happiest,” she says. “If what you’re doing is making you happy, then there’s a way to work through the difficult moments and to make it work,” she says. “There’s no substitute for hard work and I think if you’re enjoying what you’re doing and working really hard then anything becomes possible.”

Williamson is mom to son Hudson Roberts, 18, who will be attending New York University in the fall.

“I’m incredibly proud of him. He has done really well in high school and it’s all been him,” she says about her son, whom she shares with ex-husband Nick Roberts. “I’ve never pressured him to get good grades and he’s a straight-A student. I love his self-motivation and I’m really excited to see sort of what that blossoms into.”

And while Williamson is instilling a strong work ethic and the importance of happiness in her son and continuing to foster it within herself, she says her boyfriend Bobby Flay, 61, has also taught her something new through working together.

“I think one thing that Bobby prides himself on … that he specifically has instilled in me, is to lose gracefully and to appreciate the opportunities that I’m given,” she says. “Whether or not I win or lose I think losing gracefully is almost more important than winning.”

PEOPLE first confirmed that the pair were in an exclusive relationship in March 2025.

Williamson is a self-confessed fierce competitor, showcasing her skills as a titan on Food Network’s Triple Threat and competing on Top Chef, and winning the Bravo competition during season 14 in Charleston. This year, Williamson has taken her competitive drive into a new role, as a captain on BBQ Brawl alongside Flay and chef Maneet Chauhan, after five seasons as a judge.

And according to Flay, Williamson is this season.

“Brooke has wanted this position for years. She started out as one of the judges for like five seasons and she always had said to all of us that she really wanted to be a captain and a mentor and the opportunity came up this year,” Flay told PEOPLE at the 2026 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.

“I think for people watching the series, you’ll see that she has really dug her heels in and she’s determined to put her best effort in and she really wants to win. I mean, I don’t think I’ve seen anybody want to win this more than Brooke!” he says.
