A FATHER whose four children were found dead alongside their mother and grandmother in a New York apartment has given some insight into the deplorable condition his kids were living in.

Brady Harmon flew to New York to bring his children’s ashes back to Utah after they were seemingly poisoned by their grandmother, and found the apartment they lived in was “disgusting.”

Harmon’s four children, Harper, 13, Hudson, 11, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn, were found dead on June 23 inside their grandmother’s apartment by police responding to a welfare check after a neighbor called reporting she noticed “the smell of death.”

Amy Steadman, the 64-year-old grandmother, and 44-year-old Sarah Myers, the kids’ mother, were also found dead in the Mechanicville, New York, apartment, located in a town north of Albany.

The family was found in Steadman’s apartment, but Myers and her kids lived in a separate one in the same complex.

The neighbor who called 911 said she became concerned after not having heard from the family in nearly two weeks and spotting an odor and flies.

Harmon was set to see his kids on July 1 thanks to a move in the custody battle with Myers, but police told him his kids were found dead over 2,200 miles away.

Harmon, who lives in Utah, flew to New York last week to bring their ashes to his state, where he spread them on top of a mountain.

While in New York, he got to see the kind of conditions his four children, whom he hadn’t seen since 2019, had been living in.

“The conditions of the home were, the nicest word I could think of is deplorable,” he told ABC affiliate WRGB in an interview published on Wednesday.

“It smelt like a kitty litter box, it didn’t matter which room you went into, that’s what you smelt,” he said, shaking his head.

“And the amount of needless things, trash, all that sort of stuff everywhere.

“And then the state of their rooms, I mean it’s just disgusting.”

Harmon said he had no idea of the kind of conditions his children were living in.

“My wife and my mom’s like ‘Did we even see a kitty litter box?’ I said, ‘No. Not in any room,’ So, I don’t know if they took it over to their, to the other place or not, but [it’s] highly unlikely.”

The father said officials found a cat at the grandmother’s apartment almost two weeks after the incident.

“It just doesn’t make sense. I don’t think anyone ever set foot in their house as far as CPS [Child Protective Services], housing authority or anything.”

“[They] just let it go to the waste side,” he said while also hinting at some things in the home that needed to be repaired.

Harmon said he went to the home to recover some of his children’s items, like their clothes and pictures, to honor their memory and to have “something to hold onto.”

Harmon said it was difficult to determine which items belonged to each of his four children.

“I’m just going to have to accept that I think it is the right child’s belongings … unless it had their name on it,” he said.

He became overwhelmed with emotion when talking about seeing the couch his children would sit on when he talked to them on the phone, revealing it was “kind of an eye-opener.”

Harmon went on to reveal he felt there was a lack of love in the home.

“Normally when you’re proud of a picture, you put your kid’s name on it, hang it on the fridge.

“None of that was there. There was no love, there was no admiration or anything that you could even sort of pull out of this tragedy.

“They were there as a convenience and the narrative that she was trying to spin and everything else.”

Harmon told the Times Union in June that Myers would only let him speak briefly to his kids on FaceTime.

He told The U.S. Sun Myers was always in the room when they were on the phone; “she had to monitor what was being said.”

“It was like, ‘Hey dad’. It wasn’t like a really over-exuberant relationship.”

“I don’t think she ever told them they were coming out to Utah, even though I tried several times.”

The full nature of Harmon and Myers’ relationship remains unclear, but after the news broke of the incident, reports revealed a GoFundMe page was set up where Myers was trying to raise money for a domestic violence lawyer.

Harmon filed for divorce in 2020 and the case was finalized in April.

Myers was given sole physical custody while Harmon was granted time with his kids from July 1 to September 1.

Harmon told the Times Union that Myers was being investigated by Child Protective Services in New York.

Mechanicville Police Chief Bill Rabbitt said police found evidence that strongly suggested the grandmother “was involved in the deaths,” including a handwritten note.

Evidence further suggested the family died of “intentional poisoning,” and several over-the-counter and prescription medications were found at the scene, Rabbitt said.

The final determinations from the medical examiner have not yet been released, but Rabbitt said one of the kids suffered “fatal sharp force injuries.”
