Five Teenagers Dead and Family Hospitalised After Wrong-Way Motorway Collision on M9

Five teenage boys have lost their lives, and four members of a family heading to Dublin Airport have been hospitalised with serious injuries, following a head-on collision caused by a vehicle travelling the wrong direction on the M9 motorway in Co Kildare.
The fatal crash occurred around 3:00 am on the northbound carriageway of the M9 between Junction 3 and Junction 4 near Moone.
The Incident and Investigation

According to initial reports, a BMW—suspected to have been stolen—had earlier failed to stop for Gardaí before driving southbound into oncoming northbound traffic. It collided head-on with a Hyundai occupied by a family of four from Co Carlow.
Four of the teenage occupants inside the BMW were pronounced dead at the scene, and Gardaí later discovered the body of a fifth occupant. Due to the severity of the crash, authorities expect to rely on DNA testing to formally confirm the identities of the victims. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted at Naas General Hospital.
The collision has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman (Fiosrú), whose investigators attended the scene. In accordance with its statutory remit, Fiosrú investigates fatal or serious incidents involving prior Garda contact to independently determine whether Garda actions or omissions contributed to the outcome.
Investigators are also reviewing social media platforms to determine if video footage was recorded inside the vehicle prior to the collision, and are looking into potential links to the “Lucky Dip” burglary and car theft network.
Family Hospitalised in Critical Condition

The four occupants of the Hyundai were en route to Dublin Airport for a holiday when the collision occurred:
-
The driver (a 40-year-old woman) and her front-seat passenger (a woman in her 30s) were transported to Tallaght Hospital, where both remain in critical condition.
-
A rear-seat passenger (a woman in her 20s) remains hospitalised in serious condition.
-
A seven-year-old boy, also seated in the rear, is receiving treatment for serious injuries at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin.
Authorities and Community Respond

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly condemned the dangerous trend of driving against traffic on motorways, particularly when done for online attention:
“These family members were travelling innocently when they were struck by a vehicle being driven the wrong way down the motorway. What makes this reckless behaviour even more appalling is that in some cases it is being done for social media likes regardless of the potentially devastating impact it might have on innocent people and themselves.”
Representatives from the Road Safety Authority (RSA), including Interim Director of Partnerships & External Affairs Nuala Carey, extended their sympathies to the affected families, reiterating that road safety requires collective action to prevent further loss of life.

Local public representatives across Kildare and Carlow expressed shock at the scale of the tragedy. Athy Labour councillor Mark Leigh noted that two local teenagers were believed to be among the deceased, describing the event as senseless and devastating for all involved. Fine Gael councillor Paul Doogue and Sinn Féin TD Shonagh Ní Raghallaigh also voiced their condolences and praised the emergency service personnel who attended the scene.
Public Appeal for Information

Gardaí in Athy have sealed off the area for forensic collision examination and are urging any witnesses to come forward. Motorists who were driving along the M9 (northbound or southbound) between 2:00 am and 3:00 am on August 16, particularly those with dashcam footage, are asked to contact investigating officers.
