NEED TO KNOW

  • Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will attend school in the U.K. for the first time next month
  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are relocating their family to Britain after six years based in California
  • The move follows the children’s first reunion with King Charles in more than four years during the family’s summer visit

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are heading to school in Britain.

PEOPLE understands the children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will attend school in the U.K. beginning this September as the family relocates to Harry’s homeland later this month. After previously attending school near the family’s home in Montecito, California, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, will now continue their education in Britain.

The location of the children’s new school, along with the family’s private, non-royal residence, is being kept private. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish an independent home in Britain rather than live on a royal property.

King Charles learned of the Sussexes’ plans on Sunday, Aug. 16, PEOPLE understands, and is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more time with the family away from the public spotlight.

The move marks the first time either child will attend school in the U.K. Archie was born in Britain in 2019 and was brought home to the couple’s previous U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor, the residence gifted to Harry and Meghan by the late Queen Elizabeth. After extensive renovations, the couple moved into the home ahead of their son’s birth.

Lilibet, meanwhile, was born in California in 2021 after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and relocated to the United States.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex purchased their reported $14 million, nine-bedroom home in Montecito in 2020, settling into the celebrity enclave in Santa Barbara County after stepping back from royal duties. They have lived there ever since — and will retain the property as they establish a new home base in the U.K., PEOPLE understands.

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have been to the U.K. twice since the family’s move to California. Prince Harry and Meghan brought their children to England in 2022, when they returned for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, marking her 70th year on the throne. During that trip, they celebrated Lili’s first birthday with a backyard party at Frogmore Cottage, and King Charles met his granddaughter for the first time.

Although Meghan returned to the U.K. for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022 and Harry has made numerous solo visits in the years since, the couple did not bring Archie and Lilibet back to Britain until this summer amid Harry’s ongoing concerns about the family’s security.

After a public back-and-forth between Harry and the palace over security concerns and accommodations, he was joined by his wife and their children in the U.K. During the trip, the family of four met with King Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 79, at Highgrove House, the monarch’s private country residence in Gloucestershire, England. It was only the third meeting between Harry and Charles since the King’s 2024 cancer diagnosis, and it also marked the first time the monarch had visited with Archie and Lili in more than four years.

The move back to the U.K. is the clearest sign yet that Prince Harry believes his family’s long-running security concerns have reached a turning point. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the matter of security.

Last year, Meghan shared some tips for easing the transition of going back to school after summer break with PEOPLE, from surprising children with a handwritten note to asking kids about their “rose” and “thorn” over dinner.

The Duchess of Sussex suggested, “Nestle a sweet something (not suggesting candy) into their backpack on the first Friday back to school. The first week can have a lot of big feelings, and a little nod to let them know you see them is so special. Try a tiny pack of stickers, a funny photo of your family, or an unexpected surprise like something you used to find in a Cracker Jack box.”
