Queen Camilla gets candid about King’s difficult diagnosis and why she had to keep it a secret
King Charles, who is continuing his cancer treatment, appears in good spirits as he kicks off his break in Balmoral this week with Queen Camilla.
Buckingham Palace had announced in February 2024 that the monarch had be diagnosed cancer but the type was kept undisclosed. From then on Camilla had been filling in plenty of roles for her husband.
Even though the King has taken a positive attitude about his condition, the public had been unaware of the struggle that happened behind the scenes, until Camilla finally spoke up.
As Camilla marked the 30th anniversary of Maggie’s cancer charity, she gets candid about the difficult time she had dealing with the news in a video interview.
“I remember coming to see a Maggie’s just after the King being diagnosed,” Camilla told the chief executive of Maggie’s, Dame Laura Lee. “Nobody could say anything at the time. That was quite difficult.”
Camilla shared that she almost spilled the news but it “wasn’t the time to say”.
“I looked at everybody who was suffering and all the relations and I think it made me realise even more how important these places were.”
The Queen officially opened a new Maggie’s cancer support centre at the Royal Free Hospital in north-west London on Jan 31, 2024, just two days after the King had been discharged from hospital and five days before Buckingham Palace’s announcement.
“It had never really come back to roost at home. And suddenly your husband is diagnosed and you think, ‘Goodness, I’ve been talking to all these people and now I’m the one with some relation… who’s got to help to look after my poor husband and try and understand it all’,” she continued.
“I was just longing to let it out but obviously I couldn’t,” Camilla said. “I was almost questioning them. I didn’t want to pry too deeply. Normally when I went in, I was just talking to them but I don’t know, I felt it was much more deeply.”

His strength becomes the strength of everyone near him. The King, 77, is still receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.
Queen Camilla revealed more details about the hardest time of their life in conversation with Laura Lee, Maggie’s chief executive, during her visit to the cancer support center in 2024.
Her comments were made in a short film to mark the charity’s 30th anniversary, saying: “Nothing stopped him.”
