Whoopi Goldberg Says Viewers Would Be Shocked by Her Salary After Previously Claiming She Couldn’t Afford to Retire

Whoopi Goldberg has sparked renewed interest in her earnings from The View after suggesting that the size of her paycheck would leave people stunned, despite previously saying she could not afford to retire.
The 70-year-old actress and television personality discussed her income during an appearance on Keke Palmer’s podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, where she offered a rare glimpse into her financial arrangements with the ABC daytime show.
Although Goldberg declined to reveal an exact figure, her comments contrasted with remarks she made in 2024 about needing to continue working.
Whoopi Goldberg Teases Her Enormous View Paycheck
During the podcast conversation, Palmer asked Goldberg about her career and the financial rewards of her long-running television role.
“Listen, you would be shocked,” Goldberg said, suggesting that seeing her paycheck would provoke an astonished reaction.
She declined to disclose the amount, simply adding, “It is what it is.”

Palmer responded enthusiastically, celebrating the apparent size of Goldberg’s earnings.
Goldberg has been a central figure on The View since joining in 2007, following Rosie O’Donnell’s departure.
Her salary has attracted attention for years. In 2016, reports placed her annual earnings between $5 million and $6 million.
More recently, an entertainment industry source claimed she remained the show’s highest-paid host, earning a seven-figure salary. ABC has not publicly confirmed those estimates.
Earlier Retirement Comments Resurface
Goldberg’s latest remarks have drawn attention to her previous statements about money and retirement.
During a November 2024 discussion about the financial struggles facing American workers, Goldberg insisted that she understood the pressure of earning a living.
“If I had all the money in the world, I would not be here,” she told her fellow panelists.
She also described herself as a working person and emphasized that members of her family had financial responsibilities.
“My kid has to feed her family. My great-granddaughter has to be fed by her family,” she explained.

The comments attracted scrutiny because of Goldberg’s successful Hollywood career and reported television earnings.
However, Goldberg has never publicly detailed her full financial obligations or retirement requirements, making it impossible to determine her personal financial position from salary estimates alone.
Goldberg Reveals The View Isn’t Her Highest-Paying Job
Despite her substantial reported earnings, Goldberg surprised Palmer by revealing that The View was not the most lucrative job of her career.
When asked directly whether the daytime programme had paid her more than any previous project, she immediately answered no.
The Oscar-winning actress, who has achieved EGOT status by winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards, also made clear that she remains interested in opportunities beyond the talk show.
Goldberg said she regularly reminds people that she is available for other projects and would be willing to leave The View temporarily when work requires it.
Her comments suggest that her television commitments have not diminished her interest in acting and other entertainment ventures.

Reports Claim Other View Hosts Faced Salary Pressure
Goldberg’s podcast appearance comes amid reports of financial cutbacks behind the scenes at The View.
An industry insider alleged that some panelists had experienced salary reductions while Goldberg continued earning seven figures.
The same reporting claimed that Alyssa Farah Griffin had been denied a substantial raise from her alleged mid-six-figure salary.
Sources also described frustration over reductions to the programme’s wardrobe budget, which reportedly limited the expensive designer clothing previously available to the hosts.
Goldberg currently shares the roundtable with Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Griffin and Ana Navarro.
After nearly two decades on the programme, her latest comments have once again placed her salary, career longevity and earlier retirement remarks under the spotlight.
