The 1% Club Contestants Stumped by a Food Puzzle That 80% of People Should Solve – Can You Get It Right in 30 Seconds?

A food-related puzzle that was supposed to be relatively easy caused an unexpected early exit for 19 contestants on The 1% Club. Even host Lee Mack was taken aback by the number of players who failed to solve the challenge, which appeared in only the second round of the ITV quiz.
Lee, 56, returned to present the latest episode of the popular game show over the weekend, but the early stages quickly delivered a surprising result.
A Simple Anagram Eliminates 19 Contestants

Unlike traditional quiz shows, The 1% Club does not rely on general knowledge. Instead, contestants must use logic, reasoning and common sense to work through a series of puzzles.
The competition begins with 100 players, who are gradually eliminated as the questions become more difficult. Their ultimate goal is to reach the final round, where they face a question that only 1% of the public are expected to answer correctly.
However, Saturday’s episode saw a significant number of contestants leave much earlier than expected.
The trouble began with an 80% question, meaning that 80% of the public were expected to answer it correctly. Despite its relatively accessible difficulty rating, the challenge caught 19 players out.

The question asked:
“What common food below has had its letters rearranged into alphabetical order? ABDER.”
Contestants had just 30 seconds to work out which familiar food was hidden within the five letters.
The answer was BREAD.
Although the letters appeared jumbled, they simply needed to be rearranged to spell the name of the food. Yet 19 contestants failed to identify the word before time ran out.
Lee Mack Can’t Believe So Many Players Got It Wrong

When the result was revealed, Lee was visibly surprised by the number of people who had been eliminated.
“Good God!” he exclaimed before acknowledging the contestants who had lost their places in the game.
He then turned to the answer and questioned the scale of the eliminations.
“We lost 19 on that one?”
After confirming that the answer was bread, the presenter admitted he had not expected so many players to struggle with the puzzle.
“It’s bread. I’m surprised – I have to be honest – that so many people went out on that,” he said.
Lee added: “It doesn’t help, but I’m only being honest.”
The reaction highlighted just how easily a seemingly straightforward question can catch people off guard, particularly when they are working against a strict time limit.
With 19 contestants already eliminated in the second round, the remaining players had plenty more challenges ahead if they hoped to reach the final 1% question.
Could you have spotted the word BREAD from the letters ABDER within 30 seconds?
The 1% Club continues on ITV and is available to watch on ITVX.
