John-Paul Miller’s Former Best Man, Mark Kaufman, Disputes His Portrayal in ‘Death of the Pastor’s Wife’

Mark Kaufman, who was the best man at John-Paul and Mica Miller’s wedding, has reportedly issued a statement responding to his appearances in Netflix’s docuseries “Death of the Pastor’s Wife.” The series, which released on Aug. 26, has brought fresh scrutiny into Mica Miller’s death, and Kaufman has objected to some of its implications about him.
“The release of Netflix’s *Death of a Pastor’s Wife* has brought renewed attention to the tragic death of Mica Miller and has also resulted in my name, my relationships, and my business becoming part of the public discussion surrounding her death,” said Kaufman, according to Robbie Harvey.
Harvey is a social media journalist and commentator who uses his platform to discuss alleged abuse and to draw attention to cases such as Mica Miller’s. Since Mica’s death in April 2024, Harvey has shared records, interviews, videos, and commentary about her relationship with John-Paul Miller and the circumstances surrounding Mica’s death.
“Mica was my friend, and her death was a tragedy,” said Kaufman, according to Harvey’s post. “Being drawn into the controversy surrounding the Netflix series, and seeing speculation and allegations about me repeated publicly, has taken a significant toll on me, my family, my friends, my employees, and my business.”
John-Paul Miller and Mica Miller in ‘Death of the Pastor’s Wife’
ChurchLeaders has been following the story of Mica Miller since the spring of 2024. On April 28, 2024, John-Paul Miller, former pastor of Solid Rock at Market Common in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, announced during a Sunday church service that his wife, Mica, had died by suicide the day before. Mica was 30 years old. John-Paul, then 44, has maintained that his wife was extremely troubled with mental health problems.
However, in the time since Mica’s death and again in the new docuseries, Mica’s friends and family members have accused John-Paul Miller of abusing Mica during the Millers’ marriage, cheating on her, lying about and manipulating Mica, and repeatedly harassing and stalking her after she left him. He has also been accused in one lawsuit of raping a minor girl and, in another lawsuit, of sexually assaulting a different minor girl.
John-Paul has not been charged with causing Mica’s death, but in December 2025, a federal grand jury in South Carolina indicted him for cyberstalking Mica Miller and for making false statements to federal investigators. John-Paul pleaded not guilty, and his federal trial is currently scheduled for October.
