Why a Public Apology Won’t Heal the Rift Between Prince William and Prince Harry

Even a formal, public apology from Prince Harry is unlikely to bridge the deep divide with his older brother, according to a royal insider.
Recent speculation suggests the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may be considering a public statement to address the ongoing tensions surrounding their royal departure. While such a gesture might help mend ties with King Charles, sources indicate Prince William remains completely uninterested in reconciliation.
A Fractured Brotherhood
The relationship between the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex has effectively broken down, with the pair remaining out of contact for an extended period. The estrangement escalated significantly following the 2023 release of Harry’s memoir, Spare.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold, who served the household until 2011 and observed the brothers during their closer years alongside their father, believes the damage is irreversible.
Speaking on The Royals Uncensored podcast, Harrold stated:
“Even with a public apology, I don’t see any way back now between the two of them. From what I’m hearing from the inside, William is still adamant he doesn’t want anything to do with his brother.”
Contrasting Paths to Reconciliation
While William appears unwilling to reopen communication, King Charles reportedly holds a different perspective. According to Harrold, the monarch remains open to maintaining a relationship with his son, driven particularly by a desire to connect with his grandchildren.
Harry took a step toward his father last month with an in-person meeting at Highgrove. However, William was not involved in the visit and has maintained total distance from his younger brother.
The Fallout Since 2020
The dynamic between the brothers shifted dramatically after Harry and Meghan stepped back from frontline royal duties in 2020. A series of public criticisms followed, including high-profile television interviews, the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, and the explosive revelations in Spare.
Although Harry has avoided commenting publicly on the Royal Family over the past year and stated in 2025 that he hopes to reconcile with his family, the path back to Prince William remains firmly closed.
